Alex Ferguson to Retire?

cl-trophy.jpg

The scintillating form of Manchester United has forced many admirers to declare this is the best Manchester United team that Alex Ferguson has managed during his 22 years at Old Trafford.

Whilst that may seem a pretty outlandish statement, the facts cannot be argued. Christiano Ronaldo is arguably the World’s best player at the moment. Whilst critics claim that he has yet to cut it on the big stage - his goal vs AS Roma, was his first in Champions League knockout football - the fact that he has scored 36 goals, from the wing, cannot be ignored.

On the 50th anniversary of the Munich tragedy, a year in which the Club would love to honour the players and staff killed, it begs the question…

Who can stop them at the moment in both the league and the Champions League?

The author for one believes they will not only destroy AS Roma next week, but also dispense of an off colour FC Barcelona, thus booking their seat in the first all English final in Moscow in May.

Whoever the opponents are, be it Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea, it is going to be a mouthwatering spectacle, and a fantastic advert for the EPL.

It throws up a question though…..

During the lean spell in the mid noughties, at a time when Man Utd were rebuilding from the team of 1999, many believed that Ferguson should have retired after Barcelona. Indeed, Ferguson himself annulled his 2001 retirement, saying his hunger for the game was too much.

However, with arguably his best team ever, and a 3rd European Cup a possibility, it begs the question, will Sir Alec announce his retirment if Man Utd wins in Moscow in May…..or for that matter if they lose?

The author for one believes that if the former occurs, the chance is highly likely….Ferguson is easily the most decorated and respected manager in 2 generations of the English game (since Bob Paisley, who won 3 European Cups and 6 Titles) and he is going to want to go out at the top.

We all know how difficult it is to win the European Cup, it could be another 9 years and by that time SAF will be well into his 70’s…..watch this space should Man Utd win.

Moscow in May - what a spectacle awaits…..
